New Star Trek Barbie

New 'Star Trek' Barbies headed to a galaxy near you

Thursday, January 22nd 2009, 1:55 PM

It's possible Barbie's latest incarnation will appeal more to grown-up geeks than elementary school girls.

CBS and Mattel released photos Wednesday of three new Star Trek Barbies, in honor of the "Star Trek" film opening in May.

Collectors can snap up Captain Kirk, Spock and Lieutenant Uhura, modeled after the actors who play them in the upcoming Paramount film - Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana. Each doll comes equipped with its own phaser and communicator.

And unlike most Barbie dolls, the crew from the Enterprise has a grown-up fan's price tag: $43.19 a pop.

This isn't Barbie's first foray into unknown galaxies: Mattel released a Star Trek-themed Barbie and Ken in 1996 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the TV show.

The latest round of Star Trek Barbies will be available at Wal-Mart stores starting April 20.
